Does a Non Toxic Whistling Tea Kettle exist ? Is your tea kettle or coffee maker poisoning your water ? In a society deeply concerned about going "green", and the purchase of bottled and filters for water at their height, the answer may surprise you ! There are hundreds of tea kettles available on Amazon, that range in price from $ 5.00 to $ 475.00. I wonder who would spend $ 475.00 on a tea kettle ? All it's supposed to do is boil water. Should a non toxic whistling tea kettle be so difficult to find in the year 2012 ? Apparently, it is ! And it also is certain TEA KETTLE MADNESS ! Available stainless steel tea kettles, { be they $ 50 or $ 150.00 }, are seamed together with materials that rust within a few months. How much rust and unknown substances from the seam are being boiled into the water from the very first use ? Suppliers like Cuisinart, { $ 120.00 for their kettle } recommend that consumers wipe the inside dry after every use to avoid this issue ! Aw c'mon ! Who has time for that ? It's a water pot ! Does this make any sense at all ? Available enameled tea kettles, { such as Paula Deen's @ $ 50.00 }, apparently fail as well. Consumers complain when the interior is wiped with a paper towel, a dark residue from the enamel comes out ! UGH ! What's in that enamel ? What's it doing to the water ? Has it been rendered "SAFE" by USA standards ? There are kettles lined with non stick coatings, just like the stuff they put on fry pans and other cookware. Have you ever inspected a used "teflon" coated pot after use ? The coating wears away...into the food and water ! Common sense tells us THIS CAN'T BE NON TOXIC ! Literally look into the available electric water kettles that automatically shut themselves off when the water has boiled. EVERY SINGLE ONE has a toxic seam or immersed plastic piece. We all KNOW that boiled plastic releases toxins into the water. It made me think of all the coffee makers people use where the water is heated in plastic or unseen areas and the consumer simply doesn't consider what's being absorbed into the water ! The available glass tea kettles come with whistling toxic plastic lids as well as warnings in case the glass shatters ! For $ 190.00, the Brits boast a tea kettle made of copper. Apparently, the copper gets boiled into the water. An overabundance of copper in the human body causes a list of maladies. NOT AT ALL A GOOD IDEA ! The ONE and ONLY NON TOXIC TEA KETTLE I have found is ONLY being offered by The Vermont Country Store. Click on their highlighted name to view their product. They claim stainless steel tea kettles, in three sizes, with ONE HUGE drawback; NO WHISTLE !!! It's astounding, frustrating and disgusting that there is only ONE supplier, therefore only ONE choice ! In search for the NON TOXIC WHISTLING TEA KETTLE, I simply conclude that a fortune can be made by creating and marketing one. If you can shed some light on this topic, I sure would like to know !

I didnt consider the residue in my teapot was from the pot and not the water, but it makes sense to me now. I use a brita to filter my water first. There shouldnt be any residue at all. when I think how long ive used this old one and all the junk i kept cleaning its awful Gonna order a new one from vermont.

I'm happy with the one I now have that does not whistle. I promised myself NOT to leave the room until it begins to boil...I'm afraid I'll get involved with something else and forget !!!

Hi there! I was just wonder how you know that the tea kettle you recommend is non-toxic? It appears to be made in China where regulation is lax. Also, it is not just the soldered seams I am concerned about but the steel itself. Too much nickel is not a good thing, especially for one with allergies....My search for a non-toxic tea kettle that whistles has been frustrating! Thanks for your time. I know this is an old thread but I am hoping you get the chance to answer.

Yes Janel, you have excellent concerns that I did NOT address. This is a VERY SERIOUS issue. Even glass pots may contain dangerous amounts of lead. Perhaps it's best to use a small stainless cooking pot that you are sure about until someone,{ I ? }, can manufacture a certified SAFE whistling,{ preferably }, tea kettle...In the meantime, I will augment this post to reflect your VERY VALID concerns !!! THANK YOU for the heads up !

Hey Caroline...THANK YOU for adding this teapot to the list of "GOOD ONES". I've shared your information on Facebook so that people will know there is another choice. As far as durability goes, well...I'd personally still prefer stainless steel...I can be clumsy when I rush around and would be very careful not to ping this ceramic kettle with concern of weakening or cracking it. Still, it's boasting to be toxin free and this is a good thing, if it's true. THANKS AGAIN for sharing this info !

Thank you for this info. I was having trouble deciding which one to get. By the way - the best one I have found is Salad Master - it is titanium steel, has a life time warranty and a removable whistle. It is around $400 - so will have to save up for it. You have to buy it from an individual agent.

Thank you, Tammy, for the update. That Salad Master tea kettle does sound good, and the price tag is exorbitantly RIDICULOUS !!! In the meantime, I lucked out when I visited a Restaurant Supply Warehouse that had tons of stainless for sale in bins. I found a vintage USA made stainless steel kettle without a lid, but found a suitable lid in another bin. It doesn't whistle, but I'm happy with that for now. As more and more people become aware of this problem, I'm beginning to believe that it would be a GREAT idea to create just the right NON TOXIC WHISTLING TEA KETTLE and go into business !

Any opinion on Reiss kettles coated in enamel and made in Austria?

Thank you Rose and forgive me for being so very late in response to your query. Austria generally is known for producing high quality items. I'm not familiar with the kettle you have, but if the enamel is not created in China, it probably is safe. Chinese enamels have an extremely poor reputation with dangerously high amounts of Lead, the very thing we've been warned about consuming. That will certainly leach into the water. The best bet is to contact or read about the manufacturer. I wish I could say more and I hope that when and if you find out that you will contact me and share your information. I'm still hunting for a non toxic tea kettle...one that doesn't cost $ 400.00, but is reasonably priced.

I too have been looking for a safe tea kettle after looking on the inside of my enamel one. Anyway, just have a quick question - is it safe to leave water in a stainless kettle all day on low? and if so, I can assume it doesn't rust then?

Hi Carol. Thank you for leaving a comment. Enamel coated tea kettles are mostly not a good idea. If the stainless steel kettle you are referring to is seamless then it will never rust. Stainless steel does not rust. When there is a seam that holds the bottom of the pot to the top of the pot, the danger lies in the metals or glues used to hold these two pieces together. Toxins will leach into your water from that seam. It isn't broadcast, but it is unhealthy.
